News from Maryland LCV

ANNAPOLIS — The 2008 Maryland General Assembly convened recently, with legislators expected to focus attention on social issues and the aftermath of the tax and budget battles fought out during November’s special session.

This story from Gazette.net highlights why environmental groups are pleased that the legislature has earmarked $50 million to create a fund for Chesapeake Bay clean-up. During the session, they will look to ensure that the money is spent ‘‘wisely and efficiently,” said Cindy Schwartz, executive director of the Maryland League of Conservation Voters.

The environmental agenda also includes strengthening the state’s critical areas law, which is intended to limit development along Chesapeake Bay and tidal shorelines.
